17. United 93
There were a lot of movies made this decade dealing, directly or indirectly, with the events of September 11, 2001. Most of them were forgettable, or even terrible. “United 93” was the exception, by virtue of its simplicity. This, is a thrilling story well-told, without bombast, moralizing or sentimentality. As a result, there’s space for each of us to bring our own responses, emotions, and memories to the watching of it. “United 93” is a great movie that illustrates an important aesthetic principle – if you focus on telling a story instead of telling an audience what to feel about a story, the result might be something worth remembering.
