42. Hotel Rwanda
Another on the list of movies I’ve watched once and never will again, “Hotel Rwanda” is a powerful, sobering story about the Rwandan genocide, and the heroic, courageous sacrificial actions of one man who uses all the power and influence he has built up to save a few lives in the face of a massacre. Don Cheadle is memorable in the leading role, and the whole thing just never lets up from the get-go. Making films about genocide and massacre is risky business, and there are a hundred different ways it can go wrong. “Hotel Rwanda” manages to be horrifying without becoming horror, to portray a hero without being maudlin. It is a horrific, terrific film, one I will always remember but hope to never have to watch ever again. That’s the highest praise I can lavish upon it.
