Top Movies of the Decade #49

49. Zodiac

zodiac I enthusiastically recommended “Zodiac” to a movie-loving friend shortly after I first saw it, and he hated it.   “It just goes on and on, and you never really find out who the killer is!  What kind of movie is this?”   Ah, but that’s exactly what’s so great about it;  it’s not your everyday, run-of-the-mill serial killer flick.   Instead of being about grisly murders and a race against time, it’s about obsession, cold leads, crazies, and a couple of people who simply can’t let a puzzle remain unsolved.   True, it’s amazing that a movie this wandering and uneven– at times laconic, then tense, then goofy, then scary, then laconic again — works at all, but that’s what makes it great.  The sharp, funny performances by Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey, Jr. and Mark Ruffalo – arguably the best of all three careers – are just icing on the cake.
