DVD Roundup

130109025013_doubt-movie-reviewDoubt - Philip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep go to battle, quietly, about what did or didn’t happen in the rectory.   Amy Adams gets stuck in the middle, as does Viola Davis.   All are top notch.

iousaI.O.U.S.A.  - Hey, guess what?   We don’t have no money!   (See review below.)

Alexandra - Russian grandmother wanders around and mutters about the state of a military camp, while all the soldiers look at her with misty eyes, clearly seeing their own grandmothers in her face.   Yawn.

Tale of Despereaux – Kid’s story about a mouse with a name that kids will never be able to pronounce, much less spell.   Blame it on the French.

Yes Man – Despite the completely ridiculous and shallow premise, I actually kind of enjoyed Jim Carrey in this one.   It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed Jim Carrey in anything.

Not Easily Broken – Based on a T.D. Jakes novel, which means it’s a sermon thinly disguised as a movie.   As far as thinly disguised sermons go, though, Jakes produces some of the best.   If you liked “Fireproof,”  you’ll love this.   If you didn’t like “Fireproof,”  you might point to this as what “Fireproof” could have been.

The Day the Earth Stood Still – Keanu Reeves is an alien.   Told you so.

Bedtime Stories – I’m not sure what the word “galumphing” means, but it keeps showing up in reviews of this Adam Sandler/Disney family comedy fairy tale.

House –  Not the TV show about a brilliant but rude doctor and his team of lackeys.   The horror flick that looks to be a mashup of every horror flick released in the last ten years.   You’d probably be better off with the TV show.
