Not a single thing I’ve already reviewed comes out this week. But there are a few I’ve seen….
Dear Zachary – An absolute kick in the teeth of a documentary about a murder, the slow law, and another murder. It will rip your guts out, and that’s a promise.
What Just Happened? - Robert De Niro is a producer wandering around Hollywood, trying to get people to behave so he can be happy. After about an hour of whiny directors and ridiculous actors, you just want him to start kicking people’s teeth in. Whatever happened to Raging Bull?
And quite a few I haven’t seen…
Eden - Indie marriage drama/trauma on the eve of the 10th anniversary. No big – or even semi-big – names in this one, so I guess that makes it really indie.
Chris & Don. A Love Story – documentary about Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy, and their three-decade relationship.
The Matad0r – documentary about a bullfighter questioning the morality of his beloved sport. Um, spectacle. Um, tradition.
Sex Drive - Teen sex comedy about a guy who drives across the country to lose his virginity. Apparently there’s no red light district in his town. Haven’t seen it, but I hear that Seth Green has a great small role as a horny Amish guy, and that the rest of the movie’s pretty unwatchable.
Badland – Jerry returns from Iraq with PTSD and makes life hell for everyone, including moviegoers. Got terrible reviews. Watch Stop-Loss instead.
Take - Hey look! Minnie Driver! Where’s she been? Starring in terrible indie drivel like this, apparently. Long, slow, boring, underwhelming, monotonous… these are just a few of the words critics have used to describe “Take.”
The Haunting of Molly Hartley - Molly’s mom was insane. Now Molly’s counsellor tells her the weird things that are happening to her might be genetic. Since mental illness often does run in families, this one seems a bit tasteless.
